Introduction The Food service industry has experienced significant growth over the past few decades. This growth and development has been facilitated by the contributions of some of the innovative individuals in the industry. Monaghan.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Monaghanââ¬â¢s Conributions to Society Foodservice Management specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This great American entrepreneur has contributed to the hospitality industry field through innovations made by his successful fast food pizza franchise, Dominoââ¬â¢s Pizza. This paper will set out to describe Monaghan with particular focus on his company, and the contributions that he has made to the hospitality industry. Brief History of Thomas S Monaghan Thomas S Monaghan was born in March 25, 1937 to his father who was a trucker and his mother who was a nurse. Monaghanââ¬â¢s father died in 1921 when Monaghan was four years old leaving the task of raising Monaghan to his mother. As a nurse whose job provided her with very low weekly wages, Monaghanââ¬â¢s mother was unable to provide for her two sons and they were soon taken into an orphanage in 1943. While at the orphanage, Monaghan was under the care of nuns and this led to his deep devotion to the Catholic faith (Zuber 141). Monaghan and his brother stayed in the orphanage for the next six years and they were eventually taken back by their mother in 1949. Monaghan served with the US Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959 when he was honorably discharged and after this, he returned to Michigan where he enrolled for a degree in architecture at the University of Michigan. While in school, Monaghan collaborated with his brother to open a small pizza business which was expected to help pay for his education (Dicke 134). However, Monaghan ended up dropping out of scho ol and running the business on a full time basis with great success. Dominoââ¬â¢s Pizza Dominoââ¬â¢s was started in December 1960 by the two Monaghan brothers, Thomas and James. The two bought a small pizza shop called Dominickââ¬â¢s in Ypsilanti, Michigan using the $900 loan they had obtained to start their business. Later in the year 1961, James Monaghan sold his stake in the business to Thomas who henceforth became the sole owner of the business. Monaghan adopted the official ââ¬Å"Dominoââ¬â¢s Pizzaâ⬠name in 1965.Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! This concept essentially eliminated the subs and specialty pizzas, which increased the businessââ¬â¢ workload. By making these eliminations, Dominoââ¬â¢s Pizza was able to improve efficiency and therefore attain higher profits and sales. The company started to experience significant growth in the late 60s owing to the popular new business model of franchising. Monaghan was able to expand across the Midwest and by 1968, the business had five franchise locations. Monaghan promoted internal franchising by encouraging the store managers to buy their own franchise of Dominoââ¬â¢s (Zuber 141). This approach was highly successful since it ensured that the Dominoââ¬â¢s culture was carried on by the new owners who were already familiar with the operations of the company. Dominoââ¬â¢s Pizza has been a strong player in the US and international pizza market for decades. The company operates in 65 countries and has more than 9300 locations internationally (Hitt and Ireland 2108). Monaghanââ¬â¢s long and successful involvement with Dominoââ¬â¢s Pizza ended in 1998 when he sold a controlling 93% stake in the company to Bain Capital, a Boston-based private equity investment firm. This sale was made at $1 billion and following the sale, Monaghan ceased active involvement with the company he had founded in 1960. Zuber reveals that Monaghan disengaged himself from Dominoââ¬â¢s so that he could devote himself full-time to a number of Catholic charities (140). Contributions to Foodservice Management A Monaghanââ¬â¢s company also focused on customer satisfaction, adopting a philosophy of ââ¬Å"Total Satisfaction Guaranteeâ⬠in 1993. Hitt and Ireland reveal that this philosophy has been a cornerstone of the Domino brand for decades (2108). To ensure customer satisfaction, Dominoââ¬â¢s engaged in customer surveys and ensured that best practices were adopted. During the 1980s, Monaghan adopted a policy of taking the best practices from one franchise and applying them to the rest of the operation. Hitt and Ireland reveal that by taking the best practices of one location and applying them to all, Dominoâ⬠â¢s was able to ensure continuous improvement of quality (2108).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Monaghanââ¬â¢s Conributions to Society Foodservice Management specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Monaghan put in a lot of effort toward refining the pizza making process. Dicke reveals that by the end of the 1960s, Monaghan had visited numerous pizzerias all over the state to gain knowledge on more efficient methods of operation (133). From these experiences, Monaghan was able to refine his pizzeria by restructuring the interior and rearranging counters, coolers and work areas. These modifications improved the flow of work in all phases of the operation therefore leading to greater efficiency. Monagham also made some innovations including the dough trays that ensured that losses from damaged crust were significantly reduced (Zuber 139). Monagham also developed the corrugated pizza box that ensured that the pizzas were able to retain their heat for longer. This innovation made it possible for customers to enjoy hot pizzas even after a 30-minute delivery time. Monaghan is credited with promoting uniform quality in the food service industry. To him, the production process of Dominoââ¬â¢s was a unified whole that required standardized materials and a detailed division of labor (Hitt and Ireland 2108). The end product was required to be of a good and uniform quality. Even as Dominoââ¬â¢s expanded through franchising, Monaghan took responsibility for remodeling, equipping, and training the owners of the new outlet. This ensured that the quality of Dominoââ¬â¢s remained consistent even as major expansions occurred. The Dominoââ¬â¢s franchise is well known for delivering its pizzas in a timely manner. Monaghanââ¬â¢s company is the market leader in pizza delivery and it enjoys a market share of up to 20% in this segment (Hitt and Ireland 2108). This can be credited to Monaghanà ¢â¬â¢s concern with improving service time in addition to offering quality customer service. Dominoââ¬â¢s has been able to establish a niche for itself in its ordering and delivery processes. Tracy argues that if a business is able to increase the speed at which it delivers the specific results that the consumers want, it will be able to increase the value of its products (140).Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? Discursive Essay â⬠Footballers Do Not Deserve The High Salaries They Command
Discursive Essay ââ¬â Footballers Do Not Deserve The High Salaries They Command Free Online Research Papers Discursive Essay Footballers Do Not Deserve The High Salaries They Command Many people think that footballers are paid too much money for doing too little effort. However, this can be argued because they are people who have dedicated their entire life to this sport and therefore they should be rewarded. This leads us to the question: Do footballers deserve high salaries? Firstly, some famous footballers are paid huge amounts of money such as Ronaldo who are paid millions of euros every year. This makes us feel that it is unreasonable that there are so many people dying of famine in the world and these people are given so much money for performing an insignificant effort. It even make us feel irritated to know how these football players waste their money in wants that are of no use such as Etoo, (a famous football player in Football Club Barcelona, colloquially said by the Spanish people ââ¬Å"Barsaâ⬠) who possesses about fifteen expensive cars. A lot of money is needed for many purposes: for example for the aid of starving people in the less economically developed countries or in the building of more hospitals for our own health and security. Secondly, people argue that there are other professions that provide far much more for the population that footballers do and that they are poorly paid in comparison. They should be paid more. Other people even think that what they are paid would be justified if they performed better in the actual matches. Many people say that one goal in a ninety-minute match or a draw implies an awful quality performance. On the other hand, the opinion of the spectators is that these players have dedicated their full lives to their job which involves harsh training and the maintenance of physical fitness through intense daily training so he has to be under the pressure of their trainer who requires them to be completely fit and train strictly. Furthermore, apart from the pressure exerted from their instructor, they are under the pressure of the audience. They have always to play correctly and not make any mistake so that the media and the public will not criticize them. A single error would represent a possible end of the career of that player. In addition to this, we have to consider the fact that the age of retirement for a professional football player is of about 30-40 years (depending of the physical state of the player) which means that this person relies on the money he has gained in his short lifetime as a professional footballer therefore football players need the money for the future so they can sustain themselves and their future generations. Finally, the football business is private, no public money pays for the bills so why should we care about how much are the players paid? It is a sport that is enjoyed by millions of people and it is known everywhere so it is maybe true that these players are worth the money, that their talent deserves this money. In conclusion, my opinion is that footballers donââ¬â¢t perform such a simple, undemanding and effortless job, they dedicate their lives to this sport so that the people can enjoy it and it is quite complex for them to maintain their physical strength and fitness to survive ninety minutes running. They also are under a lot of pressure from their instructors, media and the whole audience. However, I do consider that the sum of money they are paid is quite over exaggerated, it is too much and even if it is not that easy to become a professional player, the effort is not worth millions of euros and I believe that some of these money should be for other purposes such as stopping the famine and starvation in the world. So footballers should be compensated for their effort but with so much money. Statement of Intent for a Councel Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Statement of Intent for a Councel - Essay Example I am sure with these qualities that I possess I will be able to cope up with the external pressures and will be able to come out with flying colors. I consider the global exposure that I have got as one of the big assets of mine. The important aspect of such an asset is that, it allows me to identify the concepts and ideas that could go well in accordance with each country in which they are implemented. As a result, I am confident enough to say that I have the ability to determine the success and impact of an idea in a particular region. My experiences with several regions come from the fact that I have been part of several governmental projects spanning across all parts of the world. With my team, we have expanded over 75 countries implementing developmental projects in different fields varying from judicial transparency, telemedicine to educational centers. I have a strong knowledge about partnering with government through these projects and the results of all those projects have a lways exceeded the expectations of the clients, providing them with the comfort of completing a profitable business. My team consists of 125 members and they are spread out, working across several countries. An important aspect of my team is that they are culturally diverse and hence there practices and customs differ accordingly. As the lead of the team, I have successfully overcome this challenge and instilled within each one of them a sense of unity and sameness. I have made sure to keep the team priorities first before attending to any individual favors. I am very proud that I have built a work environment that fosters growth and understands the differences between country specific challenges and works according to the specific cultural values. My knowledge about the diversities of the cultures, business and government transition processes in different regions and countries will assist me in the discussions and work groups that analyze global issues. My current position is perfo rmance driven. Hence, I have always worked as an indubitable worker, whose primary purpose has always been to give results that exceed expectations. I am sure I would continue with the same intent in this program too. My ability to take complex data and make it measurable and understandable is one of my greatest strengths. My focus is to ensure all outcomes are measurable in such a way that it allows me to analyze current and historical information in a rigorous manner. My working involves dissecting the process on which the data was produced to ensure that the information is not an anomaly but can be used by the team to understand or theorize a highly successful and a measurable outcome. Another aspect of my abilities that I would like to put forth here is my leadership skills. Obviously, one could understand that managing a 125 member team is no small thing. The fact that I have successfully managed such a team speaks in itself for my leadership skills. I am sure that such skills, exercised within this group, will be benefitting mutually. I have sharp inquisitive skills that allow me to identify, strategize and execute on an objective or problem. My daily involvement with the group will ensure a seamless communication between all group members, mentoring and developing skills and hence, gives an opportunity for an

Benjamin franklin, testimony against the stamp act Essay
Benjamin franklin, testimony against the stamp act - Essay Example Instead, here it is possible to see that the way diplomacy was handled between the two before the revolution and before the United States was formed. The transcript is the biggest part of the document, and in it Benjamin Franklin answers questions with honesty, and seems to be treated with respect. He says that the colonies ââ¬Å"objected only to direct taxes,â⬠which apparently was not understood in England, and claims that people in the Americas would only pay the stamp duty ââ¬Å"unless compelled by force of arms,â⬠basically meaning that England would have to go to war with them. While this seems like something that is obvious today, presumably the people in England genuinely did not have any idea about how the colonies felt. It is easy to see from the cleverness and straightforward quality of Franklins answers why the author of the summary included with the transcript says that securing the repeal of the act ââ¬Å"greatly enhanced his reputation both in England and

Concussions in football Essay Example for Free
Concussions in football Essay The quarterback drops back into the pocket and begins looking down field towards his receivers. One of the defensive linemen breaks through the offensive line and the quarterback quickly throws the ball away, but not before he is slung to the ground. As the quarterback lands on the ground, his head cracks back and hits the turf with tremendous force; and despite wearing a protective football helmet, the quarterback suffers a severe concussion. Concussions happen weekly in the NFL to players of all positions due to the tremendous force these players are hit with weekly and need to be noted more carefully. The short and long term effects of multiple concussions can be devastating to the human mind. Not only does the brain suffer long term physical damage, players often suffer from long term mental problems. So what is the NFL doing about this? Surprisingly enough, very little. Before we get started, its very important to know what exactly a concussion is. A concussion is the most common type of traumatic brain injury. A concussion involves a transient loss of mental function. It can be caused by acceleration or deceleration forces, or by a direct blow to the head. Whether a player is hit with a helmet to helmet type of hit, a face mask, or just hits his head to hard on the turf; they can all cause serious concussions. Concussions werent taken very seriously until the middle of the 20th century. Often times, if a player said he was ok to go back onto the field after a concussion; the team doctors would let him. Recently, however, the NFL began doing studies on concussions due to the career ending injuries to Troy Aikman and Steve Young. In 1994, the NFL commissioned a research committee to learn more about concussions and the lasting effects that they had on players. The lead investigator, Dr. Elliot Pellman, took a look at videotapes from 174 different concussion instances to determine what designs they could make in the NFL helmet to reduce the amount of concussions that players suffered. Pellman and his colleagues wrote in January 2005 that returning to play after a concussion does not involve significant risk of a second injury either in the same game or during the season. However, a 2003 NCAA study of 2,905 college football players found just the opposite: Those who have suffered concussions are more susceptible to further head trauma for seven to 10 days after the injury. Pellman and his group have also stated repeatedly that their work shows no evidence of worsening injury or chronic cumulative effects of multiple concussions in NFL players. But a 2003 report by the Center for the Study of Retired Athletes at the University of North Carolina found a link between multiple concussions and depression among former pro players with histories of concussions. A 2005 follow-up study at the Center showed a connection between concussions and both brain impairment and Alzheimers disease among retired NFL players. Pellman told the NFL commissioner that half of the players that suffer concussions in game are allowed to return to the game. Pellman has no objections to having the players return because he doesnt think the players risk any significant long term damage by returning. However, many experts completely disagree with Pellman. The Second International Conference on Concussion in Sport met in Prague in 2004 and released the following statement: When a player shows ANY symptoms or signs of a concussion the player should not be allowed to return to play in the current game or practice. Many sports doctors agree that no players should return after concussions for a while because they are extremely susceptible to further brain damage. Many NFL players report having blacked out after returning from a concussion in the same game. According to Pellman though, they are completely fine. Several of the countrys preeminent neurosurgeons and neurophysiologists have grown increasingly concerned that the league is putting players at risk by following Pellmans lead. For one thing, Pellman is a rheumatologist by training a specialist in the treatment of joints and muscles not a neurologist. To be honest, that is all I really need to hear about him. How is a guy that is not even a certified neurologist giving advice to the NFL about the seriousness of concussions? Not only that, Pellman refuses to look at other data regarding concussions because he only wants to look at the data that he extracted from his players. Pellman reportedly left out many different cases involving players with concussions that did not coincide with his data. An associate he worked with said that 850 or so baseline cases were left out of their study when they should have been included. The NFL has to decide how much longer it can afford to send players back into games after theyve been knocked out. How much longer it wants to tell players that multiple concussions pose no threat to their future mental health. And how much longer it wants to keep relying on Elliot Pellmans research to make its calls.

Unforgiving Rapids :: Personal Narratives Whitewater Rafting Essays
Unforgiving Rapids The unforgiving water rushes past the boat, waiting for a false move. Called a class 5, this rapid looks more like a class 6 with the water as low as it is. Six to ten foot swells come crashing down from time to time keeping the crew sharp and wet. To the right, a thousand-foot wall of stone reaches for the sky, yearning for the omnipresent. The canyon walls look as smooth as silk, yet upon contact are as coarse as sandpaper. Quartz crystals glisten in the summer sun. No storm clouds today. The skies are clear. To the left, a valley stretches into the distance, winding back and forth like a drunk driver. Weeds take over much of the bank on either side. They stretch out for miles in either direction like they are the sole owners of the canyon. It didn't used to be this way. Ten years ago you could actually see the sandy banks most of the way down the river. Now scouting is the only way to find a nice sandy beach to set up camp. Elk along the shore are a reminder of the necessity for b oiling even the cleanest water. Lawsuits loom large and safety is a priority. The speed of the water is frightening, yet exhilarating. The water's spray is cool and keeps us laughing. The captain looks anxiously about for rocks and logs. To one side, a cliff that must be four thousand feet tall looms over the raging river like an overgrown skyscraper. The canyon contrasts against the sky like black carpet in a house with white walls. Little metallic pieces of rock mirror the sun's rays and create a magical ambiance. The sky is very blue here, like the bluest water in the ocean on a clear day; not a cloud to be seen. To the other side of the river, a canyon winds into the distance like a freeway overpass. Lots of beautiful plants line the shore of the river, leaving only a few bare places where a sandy bank can be seen. Today, elk was spotted along the shore drinking from the muddy water. What a magnificent rack! It's all a great adventure. The old boat has seen better days; gray patches stick to the orange rubber of the 16 footer. Flexible yet sturdy, the boat is comfortable, like an old shoe. There are no surprises here.

Douglas Spalding Essay
Douglas Spalding was the architect of ethology, the scientific study of animal behavior. He started his research in the mid 1800s. His studies discounted British empiricist claims that animal skill regarding depth, distance; perception and sound localization were learned by the animals while they were young. Spalding study of ethology involved the determiner of behavior such as instinct is behavior that is predisposed or shaped by natural selection or innate pre-programmed behavior. To address the British empiricist claim that perceptual abilities did not require experience, he conducted an study dealing with instinct. He open a portion of an egg where chicks, baby chickens, not girls, where about to hatch and just before their eyes opened, he opened a piece of the egg, and covered the chicks head with a hood. After removing the hood; the chick showed no effects of not being able to see and was able to locate insects to eat, thus showing innate behavior is extremely valuable in animal behavior and not experience. Critical period research is learning that occurs at a specific age or life stage. Critical period is behavior thatââ¬â¢s developed within a specific time frame. Spalding withheld chicks from the mother for 10 days. The chicks didnââ¬â¢t hear or see their mother for ten days. Spalding introduced the chicks to the calls of the mother; however, the chicks did not recognize their mother. Spalding observation showed at particular stages in life innate behavior is developed with a specific time. Spalding experiments and observations supported the claim that animals innate behaviors not experiences is a determiner of behavior.
